TRENDS | Backpacks for Back To School, Or Not

I was one of those kids that couldn't wait to go back to school with my backpack in tow. I loved catching up with friends I hadn't seen over the summer and I also loved the surprise of finding out who my new classmates and teachers were going to be. I also loved back to school shopping with my mother, it was something my little brother and I did just with mom. Since we didn't have too much money, my mom would take us to the local Zellers or Fields to pick up school supplies. I would get so excited to get home to start sharping my new pencils, putting my name on everything I owned and organizing my pencil case. As I got a older, back to school shopping become more about shopping for clothes. This was where my "tiger mom" drew the line. She made sure that I was clothed decently with the basics of course but as she put it, "go get a job and pay for your own clothes".

When I was growing up, way back when...backpacks a.ka. knapsacks were only ok to carry between the ages of 4 and maybe 13 years old. After that, you would switch over to a cross body or messenger bag. Now, the backpack seems to cross all age boundaries showing up everywhere from street to luxury wear and not only used for school.

In honor of anyone going back to school, or not - Here are some backpack styles to watch for this A/W 2013:

1. Herschel Supply - This Vancouver based company has a plethora of backpacks to chose from. The "Little Americas" style is one of their best selling packs. Inspired by the mountaineering backpack, I think the hit of yellow rubber straps makes the bag. The body is made of a durable coated cotton and it retails for $99.99.

2. Meredith Wendall - I love how designers Meredith and Wendell German combine their colors and their love for American style. The patent neon pink tassels sold me on this backpack. Made with all Italian materials and retails for $595.

3. Elizabeth and James - I've alway said Leopard print is a constant in fashion and this is why this hair calf backpack is a must have this season. The front is outfitted with a full-length zip pocket, and slim leather straps act as a drawstring on top. You can get the exotic edge with this backpack from, $545.

4. The Row - Everything about this chocolate croco leather backpack oozes luxury and I really don't have to go into too much detail. I don't even have a price for it and I am sure it's ridiculously priced. But I love it anyways.

5. Erin Templeton - Local Vancouver designer Erin Templeton makes most of her product with reused leathers and I love the icy grey color of this "BYOB backpack". It has an easy access side pocket, perfect for water bottles while riding, or in true BYOB form and it retails for $250.

6. Harper Ave - An LA Based bag company who is bringing back the big shiny backpack. White is such a huge color this season and this patent cream pack with see-through PVC sides would be a great addition to your fall wardrobe. It retails for $209.

7.  Simone Camille - Simone Harouche is a stylist gone handbag designer and Nicole Ritchie is one of her many fans. Although the shape of this bag is derived from a classic sport backpack, it is anything but. Made of kangaroo hair in a hounds-tooth print, it also features antique tribal coin trims. It retails for a cool, $1,096.

8. Nasty Gal - Fall gear would not be complete without some quilting. The "Dee backpack" is the coolest black vegan leather pack featuring quilted detailing, by Nasty Gal and it retails for $60.90.
