BEAUTY | Beauty Balms, Trends

I was wondering when the Beauty Balm Cream (a.k.a. BB Cream) phenomena was going to hit North America. Actually, it's old news but I finally had some time to try a few out. Beauty Balms (also called Blemish Balms) depending on the formula, are basically an all in one tinted moisturizer with primer, and liquid foundation. It helps with moisture, anti-aging and blemishes.

Now there's another trend in it's infancy called CC Creams known as Color Correcting Creams. I'm not really sure what the difference is and I have not really seen anything in the North American market yet, so I asked Beauty Professional Erin Gerlach to weigh in on her thoughts on BB Creams versus CC Creams as well as some of her top recommendations.

What's the difference between BB and CC Creams?

"Originating in Asia, CC Creams are like BB Creams on steroids. They offer heavier colour pigment along with even more multitasking benefits that you find in BB Creams like damage and dark spot correction. Some of my top BB and CC Cream recommends are:

1. BB Cream: Tarte Tinted Treatment BB Cream which comes in 4 shades ($34) and Bobbi Brown Broad Spectrum BB Cream which comes in 5 shades ($42), both for their high quality ingredients and wide colour spectrum, available at Sephora.

2. CC Cream: Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream for it's organic ingredients and long list of benefits.  There are very few CC creams on the market thus far, so I can only choose one! $42 available at Murale"

Do you believe the hype?

"Not yet. Multitasking products can be useful if you're a beauty minimalist or on vacation, but I prefer to use and recommend specialized products to treat individual skin concerns. Although, the SPF in these creams is a great thing! I see BB and CC Creams as 'one-size-fits-all' and that's not always the most effective route to go!"

I've tested a few creams on my own and in general I am fairly happy with what BB creams offer. However I think they need to offer more shades to match a larger range of skin types. Here are my thoughts on some of the ones I have tried:

1. Elemong - It's one of Korea's best selling BB Creams but the down side is that it only comes in one shade. I find that it would be most suitable for very fair skinned only. On a 1 to 10 scale of heaviness it's about an 8. I personally think it feels more like a foundation rather then a tinted moisturizer. The coverage is better than average, however as I mentioned earlier, it is only available in one shade so it looked a little greyish in tone on my skin. $50, available at Beauty Mark.

2. Stila Stay All Day HD Beauty Balm - This one also comes in one shade and is paraben free and has SPF 30. The tone of the balm is much closer to a fleshy skin color although I still found it did not blend perfectly with my skin tone. On a scale from 1 to 10 on heaviness, it's about a 6. It feels much lighter on the face and blends well. You can most likely get away without anyhting else but a press power. $38, available at Sephora.

3. Clinique Age Defense BB Cream - It has 3 shades to choose from and it's one of the few that offers different shades. (There are others that offer more than 3 shades but there are only a handful). It's paraben free and has an SPF of 30. It blends very nicely and on a scale of 1 to 10 for heaviness it's about a 4 - 5. It's feels very nice and light more like a tinted moisturizer so it doesn't cover too well so for more coverage, I put just add a little bit of light foundation for extra coverage. $44, available at Sears Canada.
