TRAVEL | Cali Livin', Los Angeles

Lifestyle, TravelSunny ShumComment

I recently just got back from a glorious sun filled trip in Los Angeles, a.k.a. "La La Land". Most my visits to LA have always been quick since it was all work and no play. My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of attending a very cool and inspiring tech seminar at Fox Studios for Singularity University (I'll tell more in another blog post later). Since we got to house sit for a friend we decided to stay the week. We took advantage of this time and began our "slow travel". Staying in an apartment versus a hotel really made our stay in LA a unique one. We actually got a great sense of our neighbourhood and for 7 days we felt like residence of Cali. We were in the Santa Monica area and we made friends with the barrista's at our favourite coffee shop, Caffe Luxxe as well as dined at some amazing restaurants in the neighborhood. As "Part One" of my LA experience, I just wanted to share some highlights:

1. The Stanley Kubrick Exhibit at the LACMA - Firstly walking into the LACMA, there was this interactive "Yellow Rope" display. Not sure who the artist is but it was just a cool place to take a photo. The Kubrick exhibit was recommended to us by a friend and I'd have to say, even though I am not a fan of ALL his movies, it was a very worth while exhibit to see. You get to view all the behind the scene details for his movies, there's a great curated selection of set decor, a display of beautiful photography, old scripts and personal letters going back and forth between him and some very high profile people. Needless to say when I entered the "Shining" display...I got MAJOR chills up my spine. Every time I look at this picture I took of the twin blue dresses, I kind of get spooked. The Stanley Kubrick exhibit is showing until the end of the month.

2. Baco Mercat Restaurant - It's located in the historic Old Bank district and I ventured into gritty downtown just to go to this restaurant. It was on Bon Appetit's top ten list in 2012. . Although the neighborhood is still in the early stages of gentrification, the food scene seems to be blossoming. I'd have to say it was probably one my favourite meals during the trip . It's a tapa style menus so you can share and I would recommend this so you get to try more items. I had the savory boquerones, the cheese stuffed artichoke blossoms (not on the menu), the most fresh and amazing sugar snap and pear salad and a flatbread sandwich that looked something like a pizza. Everything was to die for and all the dishes represented a mix of flavours from Spain, Mexico, the Mediterranean, and the American South.

3. Isabel Marant - I had my first Isabel Marant store visit experience. I knew I wasn't walking out with anything from the store but it was a pleasant visit nonetheless. She opened a free standing store located on Melrose Place that's surrounded by a succulent and cacti garden out front. Oh by the way, news flash - the next H&M collaboration is with Isabel Marant and it launches on November 14, 2013. (What do you really think about this?) Some fans are not happy as there are thoughts that she is totally selling out.
